SEO Voodoo:
A moving target to be sure, creating high ranking search engine placement can seem a lot like voodoo. In the past there have been many tricks that webmasters used to artificially inflate their rankings. The problem with such tactics is that the folks in control of how any given search engine ranks pages are generally at least as smart as the average webmaster. Sooner or later they going to notice, which might result in a somewhat different ranking than you were looking for . . .

Which search engine is the most important?
Well it depends who you ask, but there is no disputing that Google dominates the #1 spot in the usage stats. Although, exactly who is next on the list really does depend on who you ask. (@ASK.com, no pun intended ;-)

A few quick links to some publicly available search engine usage stats:

How important is it to worry about anyone else besides the #1? A long technical answer to be sure, but the short version is "all of them". Again, it seems a little like voodoo, but the end result is that they are all connected.

While properly formated HTML pages and META tags are a required starting point, by far, the number one cause and effect on ranking is how many other sites point to yours. It is interesting logic when you think about it, but at the end of the day, your Yahoo rank has a direct affect on your Google page position. How is that for circular logic?

No Magic Bullet:
SEO work is not a quick fix. What works today may not tomorrow. It requires constant re-evaluation and adjustments. But there are some basic things that remain as consistent best practice items:

  • Properly Formated HTML & META tags.
  • Cultivate as many inbound links as your can from every source possible. But as you do this, focus on source sites that also have content relevant to yours. All links have value, but the more relevant the source site and the higher its rank, the more weight its links to you will have.
  • If your data is driven dynamically from database (i.e. content management engine like ColdFusion, Drupal, Vignette, etc...) ensure that the HTTP header data shows consistent and correct Last-Date-Mod date data.
  • Frequent updates that do not just change a the date, but actually add to the depth of content.
  • Create an XML site map (see: http://www.sitemap.org)
  • Details matter! ALT tags, Title tags, including relevant links to other relevant sites.
  • Evaluate other sites similar to yours that rank higher. Identify what is different about their site and replicate it.
  • Analyze your web traffic for searched keywords that find your content and exploit them.
